The Scrunchie Mom Life: Finding Balance in Motherhood

If you’ve ever felt caught between the worlds of holistic living and modern convenience, you’re not alone. Some moms go all-in on organic, toxin-free, and homeopathic remedies, while others embrace the ease of modern parenting. But what about those of us who value both? That’s where the “Scrunchie Mom” comes in.

I proudly embrace my Scrunchie Mom status because, let’s be real, parenting is all about balance. I’ll make homemade organic meals, but I’m also not above a Chick-fil-A run. I reach for homeopathic remedies first, but if my child is in pain, I’ll grab the Tylenol. I strive for a non-toxic home, but I won’t stress over the occasional scented candle at Grandma’s house.

Motherhood isn’t about perfection—it’s about doing what works for YOUR family.

What Is a Scrunchie Mom?

A Scrunchie Mom blends holistic, mindful parenting with modern, flexible choices. She believes in balance, grace, and doing her best without the pressure of being perfect.

âś” Uses homeopathy and herbal remedies but keeps Motrin in the cabinet just in case.

✔ Prefers organic but doesn’t stress over a bag non-organic crackers on a playdate.

âś” Limits screen time but appreciates a well-timed episode of Wild Kratts for a moment of peace.

✔ Chooses non-toxic products when possible but won’t panic over a conventional hand soap when not at home.

How I Find Balance as a Scrunchie Mom

1. Food: Healthy Eating Without the Guilt I love cooking wholesome meals, but sometimes life calls for a quick bite on the go.

  • At home: Organic meats, whole foods, raw dairy, home-cooked meals

  • Out & about: Fast food happens. And that’s okay!

2. Medicine: Natural First, Modern When Needed I lean on homeopathy, herbal tinctures, and energy healing, but I’m also grateful for modern medicine for those emergency situations.

  • First line of defense: Homeopathics, herbal tinctures, and natural remedies

  • When needed: Ibuprofen, antibiotics (for a bacterial infection only), or a doctor’s visit—because sometimes, they’re necessary

3. Toxins: Conscious Choices Without Stressing I prioritize non-toxic products, but I don’t stress over every little exposure.

  • My go-to swaps: Rowe Casa Organics, Force of Nature, clean beauty/personal care products

  • When I let it slide: Cleaning products that are used in a public building or daycare (out of your control), children’s snacks or food at birthday/school parties

4. Screen Time: Finding the Sweet Spot I encourage play, creativity, and outdoor time, but I also appreciate a well-placed show when I need to get things done.

  • Most days: Books, outdoor adventures, board games, and open-ended play

  • When needed: Educational TV time, family movie night, or when the weather is not outdoor adventure friendly

Why It’s Okay to Be a Scrunchie Mom

I used to feel guilty when I didn’t do things “perfectly.” I also felt shame and frustration when others didn’t follow my expectations for my kids. I wanted the best for them, but in doing so, I sometimes placed unrealistic demands on those who simply wanted to love and care for them in their own way. Holding onto such high expectations not only caused stress for me but also strained relationships with those closest to us. Over time, I learned that offering grace—to myself and others—was just as important as the choices I made for my children. Then I realized: stress and guilt are just as toxic as anything else. If we want to raise happy, healthy kids, we have to find our own version of balance.
