From Social Work to Holistic Healing: My Journey Toward Whole-Body Wellness

My name is Denae, and for the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of serving individuals in the social work field, helping them navigate life’s transitions and access resources to improve their lives. But despite the rewarding nature of my work, something was always calling me to go further, to dig deeper into the root causes of well-being. It wasn’t until I faced my own health challenges and the health scares of my oldest son that I realized the importance of not just treating symptoms, but healing the body from within.

In 2013, I was diagnosed with Ehrlichia, a tick-borne illness that led me to explore alternative, holistic healing methods. Through my research, I discovered the incredible power our bodies hold to heal naturally when supported properly. This discovery sparked a passion that would shape my journey and eventually lead me to a career as a Certified Massage Therapist, Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, and Mind Body Spirit Release™ Practitioner.

As a mother to three boys, I wanted to ensure that I was providing the best care for my family—not just in terms of medical attention, but in creating an environment that fosters overall well-being. When my second son was born, I knew I needed to take my research further. I enrolled in a massage therapy program in 2020, and I began to envision a space where I could combine my professional experiences with my newfound passion for holistic health. In 2022, I further expanded my knowledge by enrolling in the Mind Body Spirit Release™ Academy, which has added a deeper layer of healing techniques to my practice.

Today, I’m excited to share the space I’ve created at Raw Therapy + Wellness, where I support individuals in cultivating healthier, more balanced lives. Throughout my own journey, I’ve learned just how essential it is to nurture wellness in every aspect—mind, body, and spirit. As mothers, we are often the foundation of our homes, setting the example for health and well-being. That’s why I’m especially passionate about helping moms embrace these practices and mindsets, empowering them to create a nurturing, holistic environment for their families. Here are some of the ways I’ve found to foster a healthier home:

1. Nourish with Better Foods, Hydration, and Supplementation
Food is foundational to our health. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet can support immune function, improve mood, and provide energy for our daily lives. But good nutrition is only part of the equation. Hydration plays a key role in maintaining cellular function, aiding digestion, and promoting healthy skin. It’s essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body functioning at its best. When you focus on whole foods, hydration, and clean eating, you not only fuel your body but also send a message to your body that it is worthy of care and attention. Additionally, thoughtful supplementation can help fill nutritional gaps and support your unique health needs.

2. Create Emotional Wellness Support, Practice Gratitude, and Recognize Your Nervous System
Emotional wellness is a vital aspect of overall health. Just as we care for our bodies, we must also nurture our minds. Therapy, journaling, meditation, and mindfulness practices can help process and release emotions that may be weighing us down. One powerful practice to incorporate is gratitude—taking a moment each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for can have profound effects on mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, recognizing the state of your nervous system is crucial. Are you in a sympathetic state (fight-or-flight mode), or are you in a parasympathetic state (rest-and-digest mode)? Practicing grounding exercises and deep breathing can help shift your nervous system back into balance, reducing stress and improving emotional resilience. Creating a space at home that supports emotional well-being—a quiet area for reflection, comforting rituals, or a community of support—can go a long way in reducing stress and enhancing inner peace.

3. Embrace Self-Care Routines and Embody Self-Awareness
Self-care is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. Taking time to relax and recharge is essential for preventing burnout and maintaining overall health. Whether it’s enjoying a calming bath, indulging in a restorative massage, or taking time for a hobby that brings joy, self-care practices can help you feel more centered and balanced. Beyond physical practices, self-awareness plays a significant role in our overall health. Tuning into your body, emotions, and thoughts helps you recognize when you need rest, nourishment, or emotional release. At Raw Therapy + Wellness, I aim to provide the space and guidance for you to develop meaningful self-care routines that rejuvenate both your body and mind.

4. Prioritize a Healthy Home Environment
Your home is your sanctuary, and it should reflect your commitment to health and wellness. This means creating an environment that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and encourages positive habits. It can be as simple as decluttering your space, using non-toxic cleaning products, or adding plants that improve air quality. The energy of your home plays a significant role in your well-being, and making intentional changes can have a profound impact on your life. Creating an environment that supports your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs is key to fostering a thriving home life.

As I continue my own journey of holistic healing, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to guide others on their path to wellness. The mind, body, and spirit are deeply interconnected, and when we nurture all aspects of our health, we create the foundation for a thriving life.
